Kick-off meeting

The official opening event of the InnovaBalt project took place on September 4th 2013 at Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (IOS).

Participants of meeting had possibility to hear presentation of professor Janis Stradins about the history of chemistry in Latvia and about the development of IOS since its foundation in 1957. Traditions in organic chemistry in Latvia have created the base for the today’s achievements. Director of IOS, professor Ivars Kalvins, coordinator of InnovaBalt introduced participants with the progress of IOS and contribution to the development of Latvian pharmaceutical industry. Dr.Pharm. Maija Dambrova, manager of InnovaBalt provided comprehensive report about the objectives of InnovaBalt and planned activities (Work Packages).

Professor Ojars Sparitis, President of Latvian Academy of Sciences, congratulated collective of IOS with this success in FP7 call and gave insight on actual aspects of trans/international cooperation in research.

InnovaBalt envisages to foster the integration of IOS in European Research area to tackle Europe’s major societal challenges in health sector. One of such possibilities is connected with the active involvement in  ESFRI, European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (http://www.ec.europa.eu/research/esfri) activities. Experience and competence of IOS is completely relevant to the planned infrastructure EU-OPENSCREEN (European Infrastructure of Open Screening Platforms for Chemical Biology, http://www.eu-openscreen.de). Coordinator of EU-OPENSCREEN Dr. Roland Frank presented thorough information about objectives, tasks and further development perspectives of EU-OPENSCREEN.

As well as it was possible to get information about the implementation of FP7 projects directly from EC representative Dr. Lucas Janssen, who took part in the kick-off meeting.

Dr. Daumants Matulis from Lithuanian Institute of Biotechnology shared the experience about the implementation of similar project – „Strengthening and sustaining the european perspectives of molecular biotechnology in Lithuania” (MoBiLi , http://mobili.ibt.lt/). Project MoBiLi was finished in the spring of this year, therefore it was very valuable to hear conclusions of Dr.Matulis about the benefits achieved during this project, as well as about the possible obstacles in the process of project’s implementation.

Joint cooperation is one of the preconditions for the successful implementation of InnovaBalt.
